A first party certification process was started in 1996 by the Swiss Society of Occupational Hygienists (SSOH) in response to the requirement established by a new Ordinance on the qualification of occupational safety specialists.

The scheme awards the title of SSOH occupational hygienists based on the following requirements :

  • to possess a technical or natural science degree from a Swiss university, the Federal Institute of Technology or a Swiss higher teachers' training institute,

  • to be able to demonstrate at least 2 years of professional experience

  • to have obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene and Safety at the Workplace, or a course of equal value recognized by SSOH

  • to satisfy the SSOH's requirements of continuing education on a 3 year cycle.

Certification is granted through documentation attesting education, training and work experience that applicants are required to submit.
